An example sample image

So, what is protein?

Protein is what builds our bodies. We exist for roughly 12 kg of protein and our body replaces about 200-300 grams of the protein that is produced by our body on a daily base, in the liver and your intestines. Muscle tissue has a big impact on this. Proteins build up the cells in your body. Our organs can produce their own protein, so we don’t have to worry about those. It’s when we get our protein our of food, where it starts getting interesting.

En route with protein from food.

As you might understand, our body exists for a large amount out of protein. Proteins from food have a different composition than the proteins made by our body’s and therefore have a different path in the body. Through the help of enzymes in our stomach they are made into peptides and in the intestines into amino-acids. These amino-acids are absorbed through the intestinal wall in the blood, where they in turn are used to build up the protein of every protein in every cell in the body. Roughly 70% of the amino-acids from our nutrition is used in this process and the rest will be pee’d out or turned into energy! This way your amazing body has managed to get protein from itself and from nutrition. Special right?

Functionalities of these champs!

Besides building your muscles and the recovery of your body, proteins have a bunch of other very important functionalities in the body, for it to perform on a great level. We will tell you more about their other tasks:

Transport: They play a crucial role in the absorption and transport of nutrition, the transport of oxygen and of course the absorption and transport of the protein itself.

Building material: they build up every new cel in your body. This means that they help out entirely with the recovery off any damage in the body. They do this in your organs, bones, nervous system, and blood. So basically everything!

Enzymes are also proteins. They make sure that you have a good digestion, absorption of nutritions and anti-body’s and the generation of hormones.

Neurotransmitters: Amino-acids are the precursors of neurotransmitters. They make sure that the stimulus from the brains and nervous system are properly delegated. An example of these are dopamine and serotonin

Where do you find protein in nutrition?

You can find proteins in vegetables (grains, legumes, nuts, seeds, pips and seaweeds) and animal products (fish, meet, eggs and dairy). It’s a common misconception that yo can’t get enough of your proteins from vegetables, but that theory has been made obsolete a long time ago. Many athletes have already made the switch to plant based protein shakes! YAY for them!
